Now here’s a guy I enjoyed chatting to. Phatcatt – one of Smokoo’s most strategic bidders joined us at the Smokoo headquarters for a chat (and to pick up a few items, of course) and I got some one on one time with him.
It went something like this:
Ed – I heard you chatting to Thomas (Marketing director) in the next door office and I heard you mentioning you were a bit sceptical prior to joining the site? Could you elaborate on this?
Phc – That’s right, I was. I saw these guys bidding large amounts on the site, like way over the retail price of the product, and it didn’t make sense to me. Until much later that is.
Ed – How did it make sense to you?
Phc – Well, what I figured the guys were doing was committing to an auction and when other committed bidders were bidding on the same auction they kept going in order to win. They thought it would be better to walk away with something, rather than nothing. That’s when it clicked that it wasn’t bots or anything like that.
Ed – Then when did you join the site?
Phc – Let’s say around early November.
Ed – And how long was it until you secured your first auction?
Phc – It was about a week. It takes about a week as far as I’m concerned, to come up with good strategy. After that I won an auction, it was the Samsung Galaxy phone.
Ed – Here’s a question for you. Of all the items you won on auction, what is your favourite?
Phc - The first one is always the best. So I would say the Samsung Galaxy is by far my favourite purchase.
Ed – If you had to pick a nemesis, someone you find pretty tough to bid against on Smokoo, who would it be?
Phc – There are a few. Manuchamp was a big Nemesis of mine in the beginning but I haven’t seen him in a while. If I had to pick one now, I would have to say Mchammer, but Mchammer always comes in bursts. AJGREY is a very strategic player, but there are lots of strategic bidders, you just have to have a better strategy.
Ed – Speaking of strategy, did you take part in the Mercedes auction?
Phc – I was an observer on the Mercedes auction.
Ed – One last question – I’m sure you’ve read some of the blogs online where members of certain forums have slated us as being a scam. From your opinion, as a winning bidder, what else should we be doing to show people that Smokoo is a fully functioning legitimate company?
Phc – Yes, I’ve seen the comments. What I suggest to everybody that is unsure, to please read through the Terms and Conditions. Everything you need to know is in the T’s and C’s. The bidding that takes place on Smokoo requires skill. You can see this by many of the same winners winning. These guys have the skill and strategy and it works for them, that is why they keep winning.
Ed – That’s another interesting observation.
Phc – I have a great idea for you guys. Why don’t you host a VIP auction, in the middle of Sandton City where you invite 20 members to bid against each other in plain view of the public for something cool. You can also video stream the auction and I promise you will have loads of interest. It will also dispel any ideas that Smokoo is a scam.
Ed – That is another stunning idea. We will definitely look into it. Thank you for the chat and lets catch up again in a few weeks.
Phc – Thanks, Ed.
Ed.
