It Takes One Bid to Secure an Auction – Smokoo editor talks to AJGREY

When AJGREY stopped by the office to collect his recent purchases, we thought it would be a good time to corner the guy, offer him a cup of coffee and pick his brain on everything from bidding strategy to his thoughts on future auctions.

The conversation went something like this:

Ed – AJGREY, this is not the first time you’ve been to the Smokoo offices to collect some of your purchases, it would seem you have been a member forever, but how long has it been?

AJ – I have only been a member for about two months now.

Ed – Wow! It seems so much longer. How did you find out about Smokoo?

AJ – A friend of mine sent me the link and I never really had time to look at it. Then one day I was looking back through emails and I came across it. I clicked on it and when I got on to the Smokoo site I couldn’t believe the price of things. It looked easier than getting cake from a kid! I couldn’t wait to start buying stuff on the site and signed up and started bidding. I never got anything on my first attempt, I was hopeless. I then thought to myself I better take a step back and read all the info on the site before I start bidding again.

Ed – Then what happened?

AJ – I sat and watched a full auction, it was one of the Sony auctions, for about five hours and began to notice different guys had different strategies. It wasn’t just straightforward, there was something to it. I found it fascinating. I thought that if other people employed different strategies, then so would I and so I began developing my own strategy that has worked well for me.

Ed – That’s interesting, we know you won’t give away all your secrets but what could you tell us about your strategy and applying strategy to secure auctions on the site, in general?

AJ – I soon realised by patiently observing that every auction is different, and because every auction is different the strategy needs to be different. Each bidder has their own strategy and each auction has different bidders. Timing is VERY important and I have a way of pulling in the autobidders on some auctions. It works well. You must remember, it takes one bid to secure an auction, that’s all. It’s just a case of who gets in that final bid. That’s my attitude. I decide beforehand on how many bids I will use for each auction and I don’t go over it. So I say to myself, I have this amount of bids to win this and I must be patient and win. No emotional bidding. I see some emotional bidders on the site, but that’s not the way I do it.

Ed – Of all the auctions you won, which made you the most happy?

AJ – Definitely the Bravia TV. I wanted it badly.

Ed – Thinking of future auctions on the site, what would you like to see being auctioned?

AJ – A lot of the latest technologies but also things like Solar Power devices and Generators. Electricity is important so if you had a generator up for auction, I would go for it. Also, what about kitchen makeovers? Changing kitchen’s from normal regular electricity to gas?

Ed – That’s a great idea. We are always looking for new and exciting ideas for auctions.

Ed – Off the top of your head, who up until today has been your biggest nemesis?

AJ – There have been a few, but if I had to pick one I would say Ying.

Ed – How have you found the Smokoo support desk?

AJ – The support is excellent! I think that sums it up.

Ed – I wanted to ask you, with your new found strategy, did you take part in the Mercedes auction?

AJ – I missed it and I was so angry that I missed it. My wife couldn’t say anything to me for a whole day because of how upset I was that I missed it.

Ed – #laughing# that’s incredible!  You have bought a couple of amazing items from Smokoo and we hope you have enjoyed your Smokoo experience. We wish you all the best for 2011

AJ – Thank you.

It was an insightful chat with regular bidder AJGREY (we could easily change that to AJGREAT). We are looking forward to doing more of these kinds of interviews and getting to know some of our members.

AJGREY walked away today with nine items bought for the most ridiculous prices. Included in these were a BRAVIA LED KDL EX600 and Fujifilm 3D Camera.

And so we have another happy customer and looking forward to chatting to many more.

Ed.
